New DFG funded project on the association between iron levels and bone health

We are thrilled to be a part of a newly funded collaboration project through the German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forshungsgemeinschaft [DFG]). The FerrOs research team will investigate  the relationship between iron deficiency and iron overload on bone health and fractures.

by Adrian Martinez de la Torre

Bone is sensitive to fluctuations in systemic iron levels, as both deficiency and overload are associated with low bone mineral density (osteoporosis) and fractures. Through this collaboration grant, the FerrOs consortium aims to bring together researchers in basic and clinical research to:

  • investigate the mechanisms of iron sensing
  • analyze how iron and iron-regulatory proteins affect bone metabolism
  • elucidate if shared pathways may be suitable for concurrent treatment of bone and iron disorders
  • investigate the relationship between iron supplementation and iron overload on the incidence of fractures

Prof. Andrea Burden and Dr. Theresa Burkard will work within the consortium to investigate the epidemiology and pharmacoepidemiology of fractures associated with hemochromatosis, anemia, and iron supplementation (Project 8).
